The New Beginning Page 1

Hello and welcome to the all new ButterSword and the first page of our first continuous comic storyline.  We hope you’ll add ButterSword to your list of things to do on the internet and you’ll visit twice a week.

Why did we start over?  Mainly because after posting well beyond 700 comics and posting on nearly a daily basis for over two years, we still only had a dozen or so readers.  What we were doing wasn’t working at all.

So we gave up the art for art’s sake of a comic journal when we realized our own lives just aren’t of any interest to anyone but us, and we took the old comics down and started again fresh.

The new comics will have exciting stuff going on like other-worldly influence, strange powers, character development, critters, space and time, dimensions, and a whole lot of beans and corn.  But we still plan to have the heart of the old, and we’ll be using some of the old comics below the new ones.  Like this:

We’ll also be making animated cartoons very soon as we teach ourselves how to do so.  We just pulled our old home audio studio computer out of the very back of a stuffed full storage shed and we’re dusting it and cleaning out the spider eggs.  Soon we’ll have a place cleared in our tiny office for it and we’ll be recording our voices and sound effects and music for some of our first animated shorts.

We’ve figured out a process we think will work, but we still need to do more research into things like YouTube sizing and other boring talking that you don’t want to hear.  Suffice to say, we’ll have animation more advanced than this simple animated gif to show you very soon.

Thanks for having a look at our webcomic and more.  We hope you’ll return Monday for page two of our all new adventures as well as the surprises beneath them.  We’ll be hard at work with many ButterSword related tasks until then.  If you’d like to see a few more ButterSword comics before Monday, or you’d like more information, we recommend the ABOUT page.  Have a great weekend!

Since it’s our first post we decided to included one more comic.  We won’t often do this, but today we did.  Here’s one more:

YES I love it. Great start guys and will check back every day just cause I love reading what you guys have to say. Also today will be the day I finish up our trade and hopefully get it in the mail this weekend. Glad to have you guys back and can’t wait to see what is in store for the all new Buttersword.

  2. MC/Curtis says:

Thank you Fred! We hope more people agree with you this time around. We look forward to receiving your comics in the mail and we hope you enjoy what we send in return.

  3. Kurt says:

The animated cartoon cracks me up.

This is going to be completely awesome! Can’t wait to see what’s coming up! Love the color, love the exciting story lines, although, I will say I was kind of interested in your lives so I might miss hearing more about farting, dreams and your garden.

  5. MC/Curtis says:

    Kurt! Thank you!

Robin! Awesome! This place would not be the same without you guys.

The garden is doing great. We ate our first tomato today! All week we have been harvesting yellow squash and zucchini as big as chipotle burritos!

Our dream lately is Alaska, but we just can’t afford to drive there, and that would be our way. Jen would want to stay just the summer probably, but I’d like the whole get snowed in inside a log cabin full of food and firewood and spend the winter writing a novel thing.

Oh, and Jen is still farting. And boy can you ever hear it.

  6. Jen/Ann says:

    Hey! I don’t fart MC!

As you go about your restart, I’m going to repost a comment I made on the Company-Y web site back in October. I think it’s relevant…..and while I’m no expect, I think as a comic reader it’s at least got some merit. I believe your new story based comic will be a great way to attract new readers…..

    The original comment:

  8. MC/Curtis says:

Thanks SQL Guru. We read your post and we left the link to the original article. We thought it better suited for Company-Y, although we did discover some relevance. It has merit, as you say, but it’s also quite critical and a bit on the destructive side, so since it wasn’t aimed at ButterSword, we took it down. No offense intended.

    We’re no expect either. :)

It’s a good read though. Thanks!

  9. Sean says:

I’m pretty sure Company-Y has been abandoned.

  10. MC/Curtis says:

Probably so. It’s been a long time since they updated.
We did a guest comic for them one time.

I do think the new direction will be great for gaining readership. What you had before was entertaining, but it was very niche….not everyone would “get” it. As I said in the comment on Company Y, it was almost an artistic stream of conciousness.

Since your goal is to grow, I think having a cohesive story will be more engaging to a wider audience. And as I mentioned in that post, it takes time to grow that audience. So don’t give up (not that I expect you to — two years of daily updates for a small audience shows dedication). I’ve followed many comics from “the beginning” giving them a chance to grow and it really seems like it takes 6 to 9 months before they start to take off (it’s a lot like compound interest — the first few years seem futile, but eventually the exponential growth kicks in).

Hoping you have tons of success!

  12. MC/Curtis says:

    Awesome! Thank you SQL Guru.

Twice a week now provides time for promotion and marketing. Not things we enjoy at all, but… it’s how it’s done. We do hope to gain an audience.

So far we’ve felt as if we’ve played the same gig at the same little empty coffee house every night for the three employees, a guy reading the paper, a lady on her cellphone, two young people smoking out front, and the other bands waiting to play.

It’s… O.K. but… you start to think maybe you should rethink. So we think on stuff while we still do what we do. So then we can’t do other stuff because we’re busy doing what we do. So then… we change. And we hope as well.

But we won’t quit. We have a very epic tale to tell. Very epic indeed. No end in sight.

  13. Black says:

Very nice MC, I like Aluminum Man! Recycle Man could be his nemesis. Can’t wait to see all the changes.

  14. MC/Curtis says:

    Awesome. Thanks Black!

  15. Tony McGurk says:

I just found your site at Comic Basement so stopped by for a look. In Tasmania he would be Aluminium Man too. The I makes all the difference

  16. alecho says:

Hello there!!! New here! Never had the chance to read your old comics, but I sure wish I did. The comic about Aluminum Man was funny :) Anyways, looking forward to reading your comics!!!

  17. MC/Curtis says:

Hi alecho! Welcome to ButterSword and we hope you enjoy it!

  18. Jen/Ann says:

    Thank you alecho! Welcome!

  19. Aaron Namonkre says:

You just need to realize going into it that while this can be a very quick way to get the word out about your site, it will probably end up costing you a pretty penny as well.
