The New Beginning Page 7

The New Beginning Page 7

Hello.  I hope you had a good week.  Our new refrigerator is great in case you were wondering.  It’s gigantic!  Actually it’s a regular sized refrigerator but after that dorm room sized refrigerator it seems gigantic.

We put all of the food (except for the pantry food) and over half of the water we had inside it and it’s probably about 23% full.

We also have chilled water to enjoy now as well as ice.  Ice!

One of mankind’s greatest evils, the making of ice.  So wrong yet so refreshing in our drinks.  What’s that from the back?  You don’t like ice?  I see.

We all know one of you.  Sensitive teeth perhaps?  May I continue?

I’ve lost my thought.

I guess it wasn’t so much of a thought as it was a report on the status of our new refrigerator.  Exciting stuff.  Should I mention the bed frame we hauled home yesterday?  It has storage underneath.

I now hand the blog over to Jen.  Take it away Jen!

Hey guys!  Tonight I’m reviewing two zines by the same author, Lindsey Simard.  She is the creator of a zine/webcomic called, Weak Highlights and she was one of the Zinefest Houston organizers this year.

Lindsey stopped by our table toward the end of the event and traded us two of her zines.

Here’s a picture of the first:

This zine is a sample of her weekly autobiographical comics from 2010.  She compiled 19 full-page, 16 frame comics into this zine!  I read it while on the bus on the way to Dallas.  One of my co-workers got curious about it and I told him he could read it after me.  But then I forgot.

What an addictive zine this was!  There was so much to read and look at!  Also, this format is probably the best way to give the reader a sense of your life, but just the most interesting parts.  I like seeing the highlights of the week!

“Working for Wyatt” is one of the weekly comics in this zine and was probably my favorite.  It seems Lindsey had a super strange boss named Wyatt.  She gave great examples of the strange and hilarious things he said.  I can only imagine what it would have been like to spend 40 hours a week with this dude.

Among the humorous comics,  there are a couple of personal family issues depicted.  Like when Lindsey’s parents get divorced.  However, this brings about a funny situation in the comic called, “Chopsticks”.  This was one of my favorites also.

What a great zine!  Thanks for the trade, Lindsey!

To get your own copy, email Lindsey here.

Lindsey also traded us, “I Will Gladly Give Up That Dream”.

Don’t give up, Lindsey!  Just kidding.

This zine contains more of Lindsey’s art work and had a cockroach theme that was also present in the Zinefest Houston logo.

I think anyone who reads this zine will relate in some way but also might walk away with a different message than I walked away with.

I found it darkly humorous and kind of inspiring.  Plus, I really enjoy Lindsey’s art.

If you’d like a copy of “I Will Gladly Give Up That Dream”, email Lindsey here.

We’ll return Monday with another page of our latest comic with extra stuff beneath it.  We hope you’ll revisit.  Have a great weekend.

Also clicking those voting buttons never hurt anyone either.  Neither did tipping.

Lemonade.

Lemonade sounds pretty good right now.  I’m going to go and make some and then drink it.  Over ice.

I love Lindsey’s comics and “I Will Gladly Give Up That Dream” is my favorite Lindsey comic… so far!

  2. MC/Curtis says:

I just started Weak Highlights 2010 and it’s awesome.

  3. Tony McGurk says:

You just shouldn’t leave home without the cheese grater. My wife always does the grocery conveyor cramming thing. I prefer to wait till there’s more room.

  4. MC/Curtis says:

I caught myself beginning to do the grocery cram the other day. If I have a hand basket instead of a rolling cart I’m more likely to cram. Jen loads me up and it gets heavy.

  5. alecho says:

Hahaha cheese crater? haha, very important! :)
