Lost and Found Page 03

Tony guessed it/called it  last Monday.  Curtis and Ann ran like heck through the fire-filled dream world.

Hello! Did you have a decent week? Mine was very busy.

I have returned to drumming for a time.  In doing so it was high time for me to photograph a few of my drum concepts and show them off for no other purpose than documenting what I’ve put back together this week while I wasn’t coloring extra comics for you.

Hopefully instead of extra comics you’ll enjoy this blog.  It’s about some of the craziest drum sets you’ve ever laid eyes on and it has pictures!  See if you can guess what this one is.

Presenting… The Thing!

The Thing is… first off let me apologize for the busy backgrounds.  I know it makes it more difficult to see the drum set.  We’ve got art everywhere around here and I’m no photographer either.  Anyway…

The Thing is a hybrid, half electronic drum set made portable by attachment to a dolly.  Some folks call them a handtruck or a two-wheeler but I call them a dolly.  What you see above tips and rolls right on and off a stage on the dolly it’s mounted to.

In the background is also a little mini bass drum I fixed up this week.  But back to The Thing

The Thing contains/combines a Roland electronic drum set brain with three pads, a bass drum pad, a snare drum arm with interchangeable snare drums depending on the situation, two cymbal holders for a crash cymbal and a ride cymbal, and monitor/moderate volume speakers with sub woofer.  The cymbals as well as a high hat (pair of cymbals and stand) and throne (seat) are transported separately.

You can run a line out of it and plug right into the board or PA if more volume is required, but it can get loud enough on its own for a lot of situations too.  Hmm?  Oh what’s that behind it?

It’s a little miniature timbale kit I’m working on.  It’s only in its first stages right now.  The Thing however, is quite a veteran.  It has  gigged a bunch.

Speaking of gigged a bunch… I’ve got one more kit to show off.  I’ve long since changed it, but I used to gig with it a lot.  Presenting… this:

What the heck is it?  It’s a bongo drum kit I played sitting on the ground on a folding bleacher chair.  It has bongos, a hand tambourine, a splash hand cymbal, two microphone holders, and a pair of monitor speakers sitting above the drums at ear height.

Thus concludes my show and tell Friday.  I’d recommend showing these drum sets to your drummer friend, but they would just scoff.  We all do it our own way.  We’re drummers!

We hope you’ll join us Monday for another page of ButterSword : Lost and Found aka The Beginning of the End as well as something extra!  Have a great weekend!

I knew they would run away. It was the only sensible thing to do. That bongo drum kit is an odd looking contraption

    • MC/Curtis says:

Yep. You guessed it. I think if I’d been reading it instead of creating it I would have expected them to stand and listen. Maybe after saying something stupidly heroic like: “Well O.K. but no funny business. I have my eye on you!” But Curtis and Ann are more… sensible.

The bongo drum kit was fun and light and portable, but people started complaining that they couldn’t see me on the floor so I had to raise everything up. The new version looks a lot different but I haven’t photographed it yet.

  2. Hahaha… pretty sure I’d be looking for the exit sign, too!
Looks like some pretty cool set-ups too! Very impressive – (just be sure to drum with your legs and not with your back)! :)

  3. Mongoose says:

and then the did the Cha Cha…

  4. Bearman says:

You need to wheel that thing to a bar where there is an acoustic guitar player and then suddenly start accompanying him.

    • MC/Curtis says:

I’ve done that quite a lot. :) I always ask first by gesturing.
Some of them nod/say no but most of them nod/say yes.
Most of the time it goes pretty well.
      Most of the time.

  5. Binky says:

I guess having your drum set on a dolly makes it quite handy for quick getaways when your session didn’t go well.

  6. Fredselfish says:

Those are awesome.! I love the drums. What would you sale one of those things for. I think there is a market for them. Any way I would buy one.
On your question my week has suck being work overtime and must work all this weekend. O well I just think of the pay check. And the fact that tonight is the premier of Supernatural
    Season 7

    • MC/Curtis says:

Thanks Fred! A lot of people tell me I should patent my drum inventions but…
Really I just combine a lot of preexisting items in a creative way.
Plus they would be useless to somebody that… drove a compact car for example.

Sorry about the overtime. I’ve been doing the same lately too.
Ya… the money is the bright side.

Jen and I have a new show too. Buffy the V- I mean… Ringer!

  7. alecho says:

I would run like heck too… btw, The Thing looks awesome!!!! quite an impressive hybrid! :)

  8. Judith says:

    • MC/Curtis says:

I haven’t heard of this Organization ACK that you represent Rumpy Drummond, but I’ll google it in my spare time! Meanwhile, welcome to ButterSword and thanks for commenting!

  9. I would probably have been scared stiff!

  10. Any chance you’ll consider posting a video of yourself playing that thing? Or, is it on here somewhere and I’m just missing it?

  11. Mark Stokes says:

Now their soles are really burnin’ in hell!

I’m afraid to read any more lost and found comics cuz I’m afraid I’ll have nightmares! Devils are hella scary!

    You and Jen are awesome!

    • MC/Curtis says:

      Thanks Robin! You’re awesome too!
The comics are about to get REALLY scary in October. Just a warning.
      It’s October! It’s appropriate. Hahaha!

I would also recommend visiting and commenting on the websites of some of our new readers because I know they would take a look at what you do and love it. :)

This gig is a lot more rewarding for us with an audience and your comics are great and you deserve one too.

The drum set you linked to is awesome. It’s one of the latest of Neil Peart.
It’s pretty too. It also revolves on it’s own riser.
I guarantee he doesn’t set it up, take it down, move it, tune it…
But… He can afford to pay people to do those things, so he certainly deserves that drum set.
He can play it really well too! :)

  13. Dick Krogstad says:

Hi man! I’ve just stopped by to say thanks for this cool blog! Keep going that way.
